The company's owner, Mark Moran, has over 20 years of senior management, sales, marketing, international freight and logistics experience having worked in various parts of the world including Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Mid Pacific Islands for a number of multinationals including Procter and Gamble, Olympus Cameras, DHL, TNT and the Ford Motor Company.

Additionally he is an accomplished athlete having competed internationally in triathlon and outrigger canoeing, was one of the top adventure racers in the UK in recent years as well as being a marathon runner, skier and former rugby player.

As a result of his sporting experiences in the tropics, deserts and endurance events he is very well aware of the dangers of dehydration in healthy people let alone those who find it difficult to drink independently as a result of injury or illness.

In December 2005, after several years of increasing debilitating spinal problems, Mark had a serious operation with the goal of regaining full fitness and being athletically competitive again. The operation was a great success but during the time in hospital an idea was born.

Immediately after the operation he was unable to move for a couple of days and had very limited movement for a short while afterwards. During this time he was bed-bound and stationary. One of the main problems was getting enough to drink. The reason it was such a problem was not a lack of water, far from it, but the fact that the jug and cup were on a cabinet next to the bed and, as movement was so difficult, he was unable to get a drink unless a nurse was called to assist. This, coupled with the very hot and dry hospital environment, meant there was a very real danger of becoming dehydrated.

Mark was so convinced that he could provide a solution to this very real problem that he quit his job and bet his house on the idea. He has worked full time on taking the concept from an idea and a blank sheet of paper to the successful launch of The Hydrant and Sports Hydrant into the healthcare sector and leisure markets.

The Hydrant is now available in all NHS locations (order code UMT004) and through a number of large distributors as well as directly from Hydrate for Health Ltd via this website.
